Supers 15.8.2010
| 19.10-124 | BOX HILL NORTH | def. | CRANBOURNE |
8.9-57 |
A rainy day for the last home and away game for the year. The Supers were taking on fellow finalists, Cranbourne and were keen to make up for the defeat suffered last year in a ridiculous wind storm. A few big outs for the Supers in Hoody, Affie, Tilch and others, but the flexibility of this team meant we were able to cover more than adequately. Another big out in the first quarter, losing Damo, for precautionary measures after a head injury (hard to tell the difference between concussed and normal really!). Kev O was playing his 200th for the club, a great effort and still in form.
A great start to the game, getting some fantastic use out of the middle, thanks to some dominant ruck work by the big Rex finding his onballers well. The fisrt 10 minutes was all Demons and but for some errant kicking, we may have been 5 goals up in the first 10 minutes. Hershi particularly was finding plenty of it, perhaps out to impress his folks who had braved the weather to watch. Simmo into the forward line, Dovo to full forward and Cookie to full back all worked well and Diesel, Eddie and others all working hard for their team mates. Dash was looking the goods and Ash hitting up hard from CHF. Most notable from the sidelines was the work effort and the pressure placed on the opposition all over the ground.
The second saw much of the same, with a week in the snow and a complete abscence on the training track not seeming to hurt Matty F. Ossie chopped T-Rex out and we lost nothing, Wisey attacking from the back flank and Tony G continuing his great negating role. With the interchange bench working hard, all players were fresh and running for the duration. Pratty finding plenty of it and doing well.
The half time break was quiet, knowing that Cranny would come out hard with second place on the line. Ladder positions were unlikely to change, but the moral victory would be important. All players were able to maintain their intensity in the third. Dovo leading hard and attracting a crowd freed up other to come into the play, as well as a few nice marks for himself. Browny playing a great captains game and running down to help out in defence with some telling marks and Nuts showing us why he remains "The hand of God".
To their credit, and as expected, Cranbourne came out hard in the last and showed why they are in the finals. Some good run on football will have to be countered next game, but we were able to answer their scores with goals of our own. No-one stopped all day, in a well umpired game and credit to both sides for the good spirits. An excellent win, not for the win, but for the intensity, sharing, support and run all day. The type of football we will need to take into the finals.
Thanks to all who supported, and the Cranbourne boys for hanging around for a beer and a snag after the game. Particular thanks to our water boys in Waz and Kots, goal umpires in Chris and Arch, George and Affie for manning the bar and Tuba and Louis for boundaries. Thanks to Keith for the great photos which are now posted.
See you at training Thursday night.

1.8.14 Diamond Creek def by Box Hill North 7.7.49
Well, it was an unusual lead up to the game. The Creekers normal ground taken over by Junior Football finals, meaning we were asked to play on an oval that we deemed unfit for footy. After all the negotiations were done, we arranged for a late game on sunday evening after the NFL U17 2nd semi! We eventually got under way at about 5.45pm under lights. It was cold, but worth it. We played on a wonderful surface, longer than the MCG and while the lights could have been brighter, they were adequate for a Supers game.
The interchange bench was working overtime all game to try and keep players fresh and warm and this worked well with fresh legs available on the wide open spaces. Great to have T-Rex and Ash back, but still missing Diesel, Nuts, Cookie and others. We looked to use it out wide a little more then Diamond Creek, hooping that our runners could make use of the space. Hoody was struggling to see the ball, but was hard on the lead, supported by Eddie, Affie and others. The ball rebounded well from the half back line by Wisey and Tony G with Dash lining up at CHB and providing some great run. A 3 goal to zip first quarter, Diamond Creek unlucky not to score a major after hitting the post. The highlight was Damo slotting one from a proper 50 metres.
In the second, it turned into the Eddie show. Moved onto the ball in a rotation, his marking under lights and in wet conditions was amazing. Great run and carry, still have to work on the kicking a little, but it is getting better. Ably supported by the wings in Browny, Wisey and GC with the Oldfields proving reliable yet again. Other than some poor use of the ball ebtering the forward 50, we could have been more in front, put it down to the conditions and the lights.
The third saw us open up the Creekers a little more. Ossie getting amongst after being moved to the forward line, Hoody down to CHB in an inspired coaching move (not going to do too much to trouble the goal kicking comp down there). SB and Rex changing off the bench, Matt F working into the game, Ash rebounding well and Tilch playing a nice role sweeping.
To their credit, Diamond Creek held us scoreless in the last while getting a well deserved major (could have had a few more too but for errant kicking). Great defence from both sides and the game played within the two arcs for much of the quarter. Both sides happy to eventually hit the showers and the bar for some great hospitality (pizza sponsorship is GOOD).
With this win, the Supers make the finals for the first time in their history. After being a whipping boy for the first couple of years, it is a wel earned result by coaching staff past and present and administrations past and present. The club is a great place to be around at the moment. Lets keep up the effort on the track, one more home and away game to go against fellow finalists Cranbourne.
Thanks to all who came and supported on a bitterly cold and wet night. See you on the track.

Beaconsfield at Pakenham
It was wonderful to be greeted by the sight of a perfect playing surface on a very wide ground. After everyone had eventually found their way to sunny Pakenham, we started well with Mogi kicking our first goal and the first of the match. It was a very even first quarter and concluded with scores almost level.
The second quarter was a messy and confused affair. The fact that I myself could not see where we were failing and what needed improving may have contributed to this confusion. They managed to put on four goals in fifteen minutes and this left us five goals down at half time. Mysteriously this became a six goal deficit some time during the break.
We knew that we needed to lift in the second half and, to everyone’s credit, we did so and completely outplayed Beaconsfield. We had the ball in our 50 metres for most of the third quarter but could not seem to hurt them on the score board.
The last quarter was more of the same. The entire team put in a mighty effort and Beaconsfield did not look like scoring. Unfortunately, we were unable to convert, only posting nine points in the second half. We walked away knowing that we were a match for them but without the win.
I hope that Mogi gets well soon. A great game was played by Chris Chang, the Glandies, Phil (again) and new players Rob and Dean and Smithy for three quarters.
We have one more game to go against what could be a good team. Let’s win and sing.

A pretty wet and wild sort of day out at Ferntree Gully. Windy and drizzle for much of the game. A few out saw us take a slightly different line up in. Ash, Diesel and Affie all out for various reasons, but the team going back to a more traditional sort of line up. Eastern stated that the ground had been a bog during midweek training, but it seemed to hold up reasonably well on the day.
Big T-rex back into the ruck, but was only able to last a quarter before having to come off injured. His early work was good, getting the ball down to the midfielders with some purpose. Skills were down as was to be expected and a scrappy game ensued. The first quarter pretty even, with both sides having scoring shots but unable to convert well. Lots of 50-50 marks not paid and everyone having to earn their kicks. Browny all over the place and Dovo and Hoody presenting well in the forward line with Ossie looking a likely target as well. The back line standing up well with lots of chatter and staying well organized. Waz into the side and looked good with lots of ball and hardness at the contest. Scores roughly level going into the second.
Box Hill started to work into the game a little more in this quarter, with numerous chances and starting to set the pace for the day but constantly meeting strong resistance from the opposition. Eastern had some chances but found it difficult to convert. Kev O starting to come into his own a liitle more and the half back line led by Nuts, Tony G and Wisey constantly sending the ball back into the forward line. Woodsy taking out one of theirs in a contest. All the best to the Eastern player with a dislocated shoulder. BHN about 10 points up into half time.
The second half was characterized by a lot of stoppages, I counted about 7 ball ups in about 2 minutes early in the quarter. Woodsy up from the masters filling the hole, the voice of Paatchy and Ian O really good and lots of half chances missed mainy due to the conditions. Box Hill starting to get on top.
The last saw us get back to some of the contested ball that had seen us win the first 6 straight. Dominating across the half forward line with Ossie marking strongly, and rebounded out of defence by GC and Wisey. Browny was also prepared to run all day back into defence to help out. Matt copped some friendly fire and ended up with a nice shiner. Simmo running hard as always and Damo's big, BIG body proving useful. Dovo had his best game for the year up at CHF, as you would hope from a Team of the Century player. The desire was obvious as faults were pointed out, but this was quickly curtailed and a more positive focus taken on. Box Hill North running out 16 point winners in a hard but fair contest. Fantastic hospitality provided by Eastern, and our thanks to them for a good day.
Again, thanks to Tony Leonard, Kim O, Keith, Frosty etc for helping out on the day.

A beautiful day for football, no rain, overcast and not too cold. A big crowd attended for the fundraiser to raise money for Challenge and Ladies Day. Dingley were a bit of an unknown, but come from a strong club in the Southern League and should be strong. A few outs in Eddie, T-Rex, Smitty, Gold Coast and some others but a pretty good side on paper took the field.
The first quarter saw us start pretty well, locking the ball in for lenghty periods without too much converting, due to some good Dingo defence, and the ball coming in quickly to Dingleys forward line where they had some pretty significant height advantages. Wisey starting well and constantly getting the ball out of defence, Damo and Ash both doing well and Ozzie holding his own in the ruck. Scores about level at the end of the first.
The second saw much of the same patterns of play. Our recent break down at the stoppages was improved from last round, but still left a lot to be desired. A lack of energy was noticeable in the quarter. Matt F was doing well on his wing and Tony G continues his good form this year. Kev O back to some form and it was great to have Browny back in the team. Scores level, but Dingley using the ball well. The Box Hill Boys still looking down the lines a little too much and not quite trusting themselves to take the game on. In the patches when we did look sideways, we looked a much improved side. A shot hit the post just before half time and Dingley went in with a small lead.
From the backline, the third seemed to be all us, however we were unable to put it on the scoreboard! Lots of traffic in the forward line, only the occassional entry by the Dingos into their forward line. Box Hill shots were constantly dropping short, 2 more hit the post, marks not quite sticking, the ball taking a leg break etc etc. Still, we ended the quarter a goal or so up and hopes were high, aided by the growing injury list on the Dingley bench.
To their absolute credit, Dingley rose to the occasion, getting the first goal of the last in about 30 seconds. A pretty tough struggle throughout the quarter, the ball up and down the field. Another shot hitting the post making it 4 for the half. Dovo looking a target in the forward line and Ash cleaning up constantly in the second half. Paatchy rose to the occasion and showed that he is deceptively quick and only has eyes for the ball. 1 minute to go and BH 7 points down. A behind and some time eaten up with the kick in before the siren sounded. Well done Dingley on a fighting win.
3 games for the year and we need to win most of them to be a chance for finals for the first time in the Supers history. I cannot emphasis how disappointed I was at the loss, I wish we could play the game again tomorrow, but the only thing we can control is our efforts to get to training, support each other and keep our goal in mind.
Particular thanks to Ms Oldfield for donating some Tupperware for the raffle, Ash for organizing the Lolly prize, Luke for goal umpiring the Supers, new bloke Nick (ONE TRAINING SESSION!!!) for goal umpiring two games, the boundaries, canteen staff, helpers, George, Aff, Kots, Keith for the photos and everyone who made it a very succesful day. Apologies to anyone I have forgotten. I think we raised about $350 for Challenge. Well done all!

Day started with a new recruit walking in the door named Ian. Coach McCartin asked him if could play he said he was ok, 5 mins into the first quarter we realised he could play
and being he was a carlton premiership player, any wonder!
The boys peppered the goals in the first quarter but could not manage a majpr, mid way through the first quarter, after we did all the attacking, Knox took the ball into their forward line and scored the first goal. In an inspired move coach removed Woodsy from the ground and we then piled on 3 goals to go in 3 goals up at quarter time.
Second quarter knox started to play better footy so we had a game on. Our recruit was all over the place and couldn't be stopped. The glandys were playing great games pumping the ball forward, Phil ,who did not stop rucking all day, again one of the best players. Jackie, with deciding not to train, playing his best game of the year and Pratty staking claim for a return to the supers. Half time we went in with a small lead.
The third quarter the boys started to play good footy again, with old stagers, Clitty and Daisy giving us some goal kicking strength down forward. Our recruit wouldn't let them near the ball having about possession no. 40 by then! Unfortunately we lost Lincoln with injury, who had been a good target up till then. Pauly Bennett also played a good game up forward. Back line yet again held up by Bomber, Brad and all the back line
Last quarter knox really pushed us and got within a kick and a half until the recruit soared high to take a mark in the goal square and seal the deal. Special mention goes to Damian who kept our bench very warm
A real good team effort
Thanks to the Knox boys for a hard fought game and supporting the kids with cancer day
If I missed anyone my failing memory is to blame

A wet day for the top of the table clash between Box Hill North and Knox Lions. Fairpark Reserve was muddy and pretty heavy underfoot, particularly around the CHF area. Browny was out for us which was a big loss, but better to get him fit as we start the run home. Army was wanting us to stick to our game plan which as seen us win games to date, but the wet conditions may have made this a little more difficult than other weeks.
Off to a good start, we seemed to have the majority of play in the fisrt quarter, but were unable to convert meaning there was a lack of scoreboard pressure. Hoody was presenting well, as was Ossie, moved down to FF for the start of the game. T-Rex looked like he was going to be up against it with a quality opponent, but the midfield battled hard all day. Some courage called for and seen with Diesel running back with the flight of the ball and getting plenty of it. Simmo using his pace around the middle of the ground and Ash finding plenty on a wing. The forward line looking a little crowded with most farwards up against 2 or 3 opponents all day. Scores roughly level at the end of the first.
The second saw Wisey and Nuts start to get on top, but the kicking skills of Knox ensured they were able to finish off some good work in the middle and they were looking a little more efficient going into the forward line. Again, the ball locked in around our half forward line, but not able to penetrate deeper during the quarter. Matt acting as the roving half back was finding a bit and Kev looked an option all day as well.
Things continued to be tight in the third, with Knox able to hold a 10 point buffer for much of the quarter. Some slips while kicking were costly and on occassions, an unwillingness to take the first option proving costly.Wet weather footy is different. Knox setting up a little better at the stoppages got them out more easily than us, all things to work on at training.
The last saw Box Hill hit the front, with about 10 minutes to go. Some free kicks not quite going our way saw Knox fight back with two, before they kicked a couple more as we were trying to get goals back. The 4 1/2 goal margin probably not a completely accurate indicator of the closeness of the contest. So, our first loss of the yea, but as mentioned after the game, it is easier to learn from a loss than a win. Areas to improve on which will be addressed on the training track.
Thanks to Jo Cox, Tony, Kim, Keith, Browny and Frosty for helping out and to the Masters players who hung around to watch. See you on the track on Thursday night.
Masters Report (thanks to Gav)
Well a bleak day against Knox on a soggy, boggy oval. Our side arrived in dribs And drabs which was probably indicative of how we would eventually play. In The past Knox have always played a physical brand of football and in the Conditions we expected nothing less. Denis bought his son down for a game And with a chest as big as Buckys was likely to match up well against some of their bigger players. Bucky and Daisy were also back in the brown and gold and for a moment it was like a Blues Brothers convention getting the band back together. We got of to an ok start being there or there abouts. Head over the ball was crucial But on many occasions either the slippery conditions or dropped marks in attack Cost us plenty. Aida and Pratty were trying hard but the umps gave no leeway Considering the conditions. Down by 8 points at quarter time. The second quarter proved no different from the first with the 2 teams running Head on like billy goats. Both sides hopping to gain the smallest of advantages To prize the game from the others grasp. We kicked one they kicked one, we Missed some getable opportunities that in the end would cost dearly. A bit of Niggle crept in as some of the contests became spite full and a box of draught Was put on order with the sending off of Denis JR. (they did taste great Thursday Night for all those that missed training). A few goals down by half time but nothing Insurmountable. Glen was being tagged, Andy was being bashed from pillar to post In every contest but still the umps were unwavering in their decision making And gave us donuts. The third a fourth quarters became increasingly frustrating for both sides as Fatigue and heavy legs took their toll. Denis JR did a shoulder and left the ground. Gav started to get white line fever after being stomped twice in different contest By the same person and lost the concentration needed in the trying conditions To inch the ball forward at all costs. Then the strangest of things happened. "Ribs Chamberland" copped a knee in a marking contest front on and when down Like the proverbial bag of dung. What makes this strange is that the umpire did Not award a free kick for the knees. While Chambo was removing the knee from his chest and his chest from his back, the Knox player advised the umpire that Chambo could have a free kick to which the ump went along with. Very strange. On the day though Knox was too strong and handled the conditions a little better That us running out victors by 4 or so goals. A tuff slog and some real bruised and Battered bodies. Facing them again next week on our ground will show how much We learned from the hit out. No real stand outs on the day but the usual suspects Did battle hard. Patch got the drinks for the second game in a row and on a day like That it is always well earned.

It was not as far as I thought out to Sunshine. Most players were there very early, which was a great start to the game, allowing us to get on the circle and warm up properly. A few outs in The Captain and some moving around of the traditional starting positions. It is great to have the ability to swing players around, meaning that people are stepping up and able to fill other positions, adding flexibility for us and unpredictability for the opposition.
The ground was a circle and the grass was long. Some surface moisture in the middle would mean some washing for the wives, but all in all a good day for football. Ossie took on duties in the ruck, GC Nick down to CHB and Nuts up to CHF. The game also saw Damo sitting in a forward pocket, although I am not sure if he felt entirely cmfortable down there. Encouraged to get off to a good start, we were able to do this through some excellent ruckwork and presence around the stoppages. This was a trend that continued for much of the day. The forward line looked potent and some excellent organization and chatter in the back half, saw the boys from Box Hill off to a bit of a flyer. People finding space on the wide wings, particularly Smitty and Wisey, but also Matt and Ash suite our game style well. Nuts was presenting and Hoody (THE VIRUS) looked too much for the opposition (maybe it was the trip to DFO prior to the game that set him up!). 5 goals to nil in the first quarter.
The boys from the West weren't too happy with the umpiring and let it be known, which distracted them from the footy a bit. Both sides tending to go into the pockets in attack, but Box Hill straightning up a little more allowed a clearer shot on goal. Tilch was roaming across the half back line, cutting off lots of attacks, Tony has found some rare form and Simmo an inspiration. The yap of Ian is great in the back line and kept all players on their man. A lot of ball won out of the middle kept the Devils uder constant pressure and Hoody had snagged 6 before half time. Looking up from FB, just a lot of options and people prepared to run to make space.
The third saw the Devils come out with a lot more intensity at the contest and they were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. Conditions did make it hard, but our marks seemed to stick a bit better and opportunities were taken. The fist half of the quarter was much more of an arm wrestle than scores would indicate. Joffa was pushing hard up the ground from the half forward line, Ossie taking some beauties with a wet ball, and I think we should get Wisey to play hung over every game! Matt F kicking well and spotting up the big targets and lots of avenues to goal. Diesel is a great recruit and always goes for the ball, despite getting cleaned up on a couple of occassions.
The last again saw a much tighter contest than the scoreboard was showing, but the back line held firm with good support from the midfield, T-Rex and Ossie doubling teaming a very competent ruckman for the opposition broke the game up even more and Hershi, Damo and Kev all stepped up when The Virus was feeling the effects of the virus. A good game by all, with no passengers and people playing their role as required by the coach.
Particular thanks to Eddie's young lad, Frosty and Browny for the water (one good leg between them) and Tony Leonard, who turned up to watch, acting as runner (or walker). Again, our sincere thanks to Kim who goes about her business with no fuss, but is always ready to support. The next round sees the two undefeated sides met out at Knox, a double header with the Masters. GET TO TRAINING!

The game started with driving rain before we went out to play, making the ground a bit sloppy. Eastern have recruited well in between this game and our first meeting and took an improved side into the game.
Throughout the third quarter, we put put on the pressure with Paatchy starring down forward and kicking a couple. Close to the siren, Big Phil slotted one through on a very tight angle which put us in front going into the last quarter. A bit lucky that his celebration of "you f'ng beauty" didn't get him sent off.

A blustery day down at Elgar Park, but the rain held off for the afternoon. The Supers side missing a few players, but welcomed in "Gold Coast" Nick and Ossie for their first games. Last years game against North Footscray was played in great spirits and after a directive from the League about back chatting umps, it was likely that this one was going to be too. Teh game saw Simon Cook play his 250th for the club, a remarkable effort.
Footscray down on numbers were only able to take 17 into the game, which was probably going to make it tough a
